I think most kids at some point are a little afraid of the dark. I remember running up the stairs from my basement when the lights were off just so something wouldn’t “get” me. Most of us as adults are not afraid of the dark, but we are often afraid of our own shadow. The hidden parts of us (consciously and unconsciously) that don’t see the light. And while we may want to push it away, wholeness calls us toward it. Jung put it this way:
“The shadow is a living part of the personality and therefore wants to live with it in some form. It cannot be argued out of existence or rationalized into harmlessness.
If it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected, and is liable to burst forth suddenly in a moment of unawareness. At all counts, it forms an unconscious snag, thwarting our most well-meant intentions.”
